But that doesn't mean there aren't better tools available for a specific game type, a specific small range of platforms and so forth. Probably one of the very best for what it is trying to do (allow everyone to make games that work basically everywhere). I just haven't looked.īut yeah, Unity is a great all around general game development system. Probably are some videos out there for them or will be soonish. If I ever get around to checking out Game Guru and S2Engine HD I'll let you know how they are. Or you may come back and say "what a nightmare!" But I know you have a different view on that so you may really like it. I downloaded it at one point, opened it and immediately closed it because the GUI was far more decked out than the Unity Editor and I just don't get into all of this GUI stuff.

So, just out of interest in hearing anyone's experiences with this engine, while I wait in line at the DMV, has anyone ever played with Valve's toys Might as well give UE a go.

Unity is good, perhaps weird at times and it lacks tools for making this particular type of game since it is a general purpose editor and not really good for any specific type of game, but I read that Source2 is 100% free and I am guessing that Steam integration is included. I can only imagine what I would be able to do with that power.

Thing is, Unity can be used to make the kind of game I am building, but I have seen casual modders turn Half Life into a completely different game for foolies. YouTube videos of these games are popular. I still like these campaign/story games and even though they are old, I still find people returning to them. Since I gave 2D games "the bird", I have been going back to games like Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Turok and Half-Life for inspiration and fun. Being that Unity is effectively a mobile game engine targeted at non-developers, and Unreal is by definition a high-end graphics monster, I have been left scratching my head as of recent.
